Collins, 21, of Akron, and two brothers, 17 and 16, are being held on aggravated robbery and kidnapping charges. Collins is being held at the Summit County Jail, and the brothers are being housed in the county Juvenile Detention Center.The teens’ brother, Demico Smith, 21, of Akron, is wanted by police.Additional charges for other crimes, including three West Akron burglaries, are expected to be filed, police Lt. Rick Edwards said Thursday.University of Akron police were holding Collins on a receiving stolen property charge when they recognized his photo from a surveillance video circulated by city police. UA officers also helped identify the brothers involved in last month’s abduction.Edwards said Collins is the driver who helped kidnap a 44-year-old woman at gunpoint outside her North Highland Avenue home on Dec. 22. The woman told police she was confronted by four men outside her home, and they forced her into her SUV. She was then driven to an ATM where she withdrew money on demand. Scalise, 38, and James E. Austin, 34, both of Monroeville, were arrested Wednesday by police at the Walmart in Brimfield Township. They are being held in the Portage County Jail on theft-related charges.Police say store security had detained the men after growing suspicious when they bought and immediately returned an item stolen from another Walmart. Police Chief David Oliver said a subsequent investigation determined the men were making $400 to $500 a day while targeting more than two dozen Walmarts in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.Oliver said the men would purchase high-end items, such as electronics, and immediately return the item and keep the receipt. One would then enter the store and walk out with the identical item and return it for cash or a gift card.Police say the men had 14 store gift cards, stolen items and eight fake Nevada driver’s licenses when they were arrested. Oliver said the men on Wednesday had worked Walmart stores along Interstates 76 and 80 in Liberty Township, Austintown and Youngstown before stopping in Brimfield.CANTONPorn chargeCANTON: A Canton man is accused in federal court of possessing and distributing pornography of young children.Timothy Gilger, 31, is charged in U.S. District Court in Cleveland.Federal prosecutors contend Gilger received and distributed child pornography on Nov. 14. On Dec. 9, FBI agents and members of the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force searched Gilger’s home and found child pornography on a desktop computer inside his Gilford Avenue NW home, prosecutors said.According to court records, Gilger told investigators that he has been viewing child pornography on the Internet for several years.He was arrested in December and was being held in a federal detention facility.COPLEY TOWNSHIPFamily escapes fireCOPLEY TWP.: A fire drove a Copley Township family from their home early Thursday.The family escaped the fire at 776 Rothrock Circle without injury, Copley Fire Chief Michael Benson said.Copley, Fairlawn, Norton and Sharon Township fire departments, along with the Copley Police Department, began responding at 2:12 a.m.Fire inside the rear of the structure was extinguished. No injuries to responders were reported.The residents are staying with family nearby, Benson said.The fire is under investigation, and loss estimates were not immediately available.COVENTRY TOWNSHIPPipe bomb foundCOVENTRY TWP.: The Summit County bomb squad defused a pipe bomb discovered in a newspaper box of a residence on Homewood Drive in Coventry Township, authorities said Thursday.The squad responded about 4 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a suspected pipe bomb and determined that it was real, according to a news release from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.An investigation is under way, and authorities are seeking tips about a potential motive. No one was injured.The Homewood Drive resident discovered the 10-inch-long metal object and called authorities. The pipe bomb was about 2 inches in diameter and had a fuse attached. Bomb squad members determined the pipe was a danger and rendered it safe.Sheriff’s spokesman Bill Holland said the pipe had the ability to seriously injure or kill someone if it had exploded.Anyone with information about the pipe bomb can call their local police department or sheriff’s detectives at 330-643-2131.DOYLESTOWNFatal crashDOYLESTOWN: A Doylestown couple was killed Wednesday when their car collided with a tractor-trailer in Wayne County.Theodore Thompson, 67, and his wife, Patricia Thompson, 70, died at the crash site at state Route 57 and Sheets Road in Rittman. The truck driver was treated at Akron City Hospital.According to the State Highway Patrol, Theodore Thompson was driving a 2002 Dodge Caravan at about 6:45 a.m. and initially signaled for a right turn from Route 57. As the truck was passing from behind on the left, Thompson attempted a left turn and the two vehicles collided, troopers said.Rittman police and the Ohio Department of Transportation assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation. GREENPrison sentenceGREEN: An Akron man was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison after a jury convicted him of aggravated robbery, kidnapping, aggravated menacing and gun specifications for an incident in April when he locked his brother-in-law in the trunk of his car following a dispute with a girlfriend.David Lee Green, 38, of South Balch Street, was sentenced by retired Summit County Common Pleas Judge Patricia Cosgrove, who handled the case as a visiting judge.Green also was convicted of failure to comply with the order or signal of police for running from officers after a high-speed chase in the car. He had previously pleaded guilty to domestic violence, illegal possession of a gun and violation of a protection order in the dispute with the woman, prosecutors said.Green’s brother-in-law, who was found unharmed in the trunk of the car, was able to alert police by calling 911. Prosecutors said Green had neglected to take his cell phone.The April 18 incident began when Green had his brother-in-law drive him to the woman’s home. Prosecutors said Green then became angry when his brother-in-law revealed the location of Green’s residence to the woman.Prosecutors said police were able to locate Green driving the car after he fired numerous gunshots at the woman’s home, prompting more 911 calls by neighbors. NELSON TOWNSHIPResident threatenedNELSON TWP.: A Portage County man is jailed on charges of using a high-powered pistol to threaten a resident inside a Nelson Township home.Rudy White, 48, was arrested Tuesday on charges of aggravated burglary. Sheriff David Doak said additional charges are possible. White is accused of drawing a Desert Eagle .50-caliber semiautomatic pistol while fighting with a 48-year-old man inside the man’s home in the 12000 block of state Route 282. No shots were fired.The resident was treated for facial injuries at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. White was also treated at the hospital before being taken to jail. Deputies would not comment on the cause of the altercation.
